The Great Swamp Devil Run 2012

This morning, Alex and I participated in a race in North Jersey, the Great Swamp Devil Run 5k and 15k. It was billed as a race through Lord Stirling Park, so I was expecting park and boardwalk (it really is a swamp) and trails since we’d geocached in the park previously and were familiar with the area. The race was however, just along the road outside the park, out and back through some neighborhoods and backroads.

The race director invited runners to wear costumes, it being so close to Halloween, so I picked a runner friendly outfit: Where’s Waldo? I was the only one in costume. It was a small race, beginning with the 5k. Alex finished the out and back course in a PR of 27:11. I ran the 15k afterwards, in an unimpressive time of 1:36:02. It was just okay. The course was a little boring, however my costume did make up for some of it. Being out and back several times, down a side street, back out, down another side street, back out, etc. I saw the leaders several times and most people cheered Waldo on, or announced that they’d “found Waldo!” It was pretty fun, that part.

It was fun racing the 15k distance, and it was nice to prepare for the Trenton half coming up in just days now! But I wouldn’t make the trip for that one again, can you say uphill finish? Ick. They also had a costume contest during the awards ceremony, and myself being the ONLY one in costume, did not win! How is that possible? I think the elderly race directors did not know I was in costume, honestly. It was sad.

Overall, a little disappointing. The weather was nice, overcast, cool, but comfortable for running. The course boring, and the only hill was down for the start, up to the finish. The course was well marked and they had a good amount of volunteers pointing the way and handing out water at the stops. Also a decent selection of bagels and juice at the finish. But not big or exciting enough to come back in the future. The highlights of the day were running as Waldo and Alex’s PR.
